YEAR 7

MFL (Spanish)Term 1: ¡Vamos! – Scholars will be studying the Mira express 1 textbook and will begin term 1 learning the basics of a modern foreign language. They will be learning how to ask and answer questions, colours, numbers and the Spanish alphabet. Scholars will understand Spanish pronunciation and will also be able to use phrases in the negative. This unit will be followed by a short assessment in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 2: En el instituto – Scholars will look at regular –ar, -ir and –er verbs in Spanish and learn how to conjugate them in the present tense. Scholars will look at the topic of school and be able to communicate independently in Spanish, talking about their favourite subjects, their teachers and their lessons. Scholars will also be able to give opinions and reasons.

Term 3: Mi Familia – Scholars will explore the topic of ‘my family’ this term. By the end of the unit they will be able to use possessive adjectives to talk about their/other families. Scholars will also learn about adjective agreement and word order in a sentence. Scholars will end this unit by giving a presentation about their family.

Term 4: En Casa – Scholars will look at their houses. Scholars will also look at the verb estar (to be) and explore when it is used, why and how to conjugate it. Scholars will be able to talk about where they live and describe in detail their house and their bedroom. They will also be able to successfully use prepositions and understand stem – changing verbs.

Term 5: El Tiempo Libre – Scholars will discuss their free time, what they enjoy doing and what they do not enjoy doing. Scholars will look at irregular verbs such as salir, hacer and ir and be able to tell the time using both a 12-hour and 24-hour clock. Scholars will also be introduced to the near future tense (ir a + infinitive) and be able to use the future and present tenses interchangeably.

Term 6: En la ciudad – Scholars will discuss the area they live in. They will be able to build longer sentences using porque and pero. They will be able to use hay to say what is in their local area and be able to say what they like to do in town. They will continue to use two tenses together and this unit will end with scholars being assessed in all four skills: listening; reading; writing and speaking.

YEAR 8

Term 1: El Tiempo Libre y La comida – Scholars will discuss their free time, what they enjoy doing and what they do not enjoy doing. Scholars will also intensify their use of the near future tense (ir a + infinitive) and be able to use the future and present tenses interchangeably. Scholars will discuss meal times, shopping for food, eating at a restaurant, and discussing a past meal using the past tense. Scholars will also use more time expressions, high numbers, understand the difference between “tú" and "usted” and use preterite of “er" and "ir” verbs. Scholars will end this term by learning the preterite of different verbs and writing a creative and imaginative text. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 2: Los medios de communication ( Mi ordenador) – Scholars will be studying the Mira 3 textbook They will be learning about what we use computers for and practice the present tense with frequency expressions such as a veces, nunca etc. They will also be learning about television programmes, giving opinions and using adjectives. They will be using opinions to express their interest i.e ‘me gusta, me encanta etc’. Scholars will also be learning about going to the cinema; they will be able to talk about different types of films and use comparatives (mas… que). Scholars will discuss different types of music using the near future tense ‘voy a…’. Scholars will end this term by learning how to describe an event using the preterite tense. At the end of the term scholars will be assessed in all four MFL skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 3: El instituto (Un día en el instituto) – Scholars will describe their school, they will also be writing extended sentences using opinions and connectives. Also this term, scholars will be discussing school rules using ‘se debe’ to say you must. Scholars will also be discussing a day at school using the preterite tense. Scholars will end this term by writing a detailed description of their school using the present and preterite tense together. The assessment this term will cover listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 4: La salud (Me duele) – Scholars will learn about parts of the body and be able to use ‘me duele and me duelen’ to say what part of the body hurts. They will also be able to discuss symptoms using ‘estar and tener’ to talk about ailments. Scholars will also be discussing healthy and unhealthy food; they will be using adverbs of frequency in their discussion (Una vez al mes, Casí nunca, dos veces a la semana). Scholars will be discussing healthy living and lifestyle; they will be using the near future tense with ir… a+ infinitive. Scholars will end this term by learning how to make resolutions using two tenses together. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 5: Ganarse la vida (Mi dinero) – Scholars will be learning about chores and spending money. They will be using the verbs ‘hacer' - to do and 'poner' - to put. Scholars will also be discussing what they would like to do using me gustaría+ infinitive. They will be talking about using languages at work and making future plans (voy a viajar…). Scholars will also be learning about jobs and using the masculine and feminine jobs correctly. Scholars will end this term by discussing jobs they have done using the preterite and present tenses. Scholars will be assessed in listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Term 6: Hispanoamérica – Scholars will be expanding their knowledge and awareness about Spanish speaking countries. They will also be learning more about Central and South America, listening for gist and detail. Scholars will also be learning to discuss daily routines using clock times and reflexive verbs accurately. Scholars will be discussing environmental problems and there will be further use of ‘se debe’. Scholars will also have the opportunity to learn and talk about different famous people using the preterite tense. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Year 9

Term 1: Mi ordenador – Scholars will be studying the Mira 3 textbook. Term 6: De viaje – Scholars will be developing their social skills through various discussions, they will be able to write letters of introductions, talk about a region in Spain, meet and greet people and ask for things using necesito and puedo. Scholars will be able to buy train tickets using the 24 hour clock. They will also be discussing about a region in Spain and writing a letter using the present and near future tense together.

Year 10

Term 1: ¡Desconectate! (Local area, holiday and travel) – Scholars will be using Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Spanish. Scholars will be discussing holidays and weather, they will revise present and preterite tense. Scholars will also be discussing what they do in summer, discuss holiday preferences, using verbs of opinion to refer to different people and understand percentages to discuss populations etc. Scholars will discuss where they stayed on holiday using the imperfect tense and try to work out new words. Scholars will book accommodations and deal with holiday accommodation problems using verbs with usted to form and answer questions. Scholars will end the term giving a detailed account of a holiday using three or more tenses and including positive and negative opinions. Scholars will complete a GCSE reading assessment.

Term 2: Mi vida en el insti (School) – Scholars will discuss their present and past school. They will revise school facilities; describe school uniform and school day using adjectives. Scholars will discuss subjects and teachers using comparative and superlatives justifying opinions using a range of languages. Scholars will discuss school rules and problems, use phrases followed by an infinitive and tackle harder listening exercises. Scholars will end the term discussing school exchange, activities and achievements, using object pronouns and say how long they have been doing something. Scholars will complete a GCSE listening and reading assessment.

Term 3: Mi gente (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss socialising and social networks using para with infinitives. Scholars will make arrangements using present continuous tense to improve dialogues. Scholars will discuss reading preferences, using a range of connectives. Scholars will also describe people using adjectival agreement, use ser and estar and understand more detailed descriptions. Scholars will end this term describing friends and families using a range of relationship verbs referring to the present and past. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 4: Intereses e influencias (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss free time activities using stem changing verbs, and discuss TV programs and films using adjectives and nationalities. Scholars will discuss what they usually do using soler + infinitive, identifying correct statements in a text. Scholars will discuss sport using imperfect tense to say what you used to do. Scholars will discuss what’s trending, words that have more than one meaning, and different types of entertainment. Scholars will end the term talking about who inspires them using a range of past tenses. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 5: Ciudades (Local area, holiday and travel, identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss places in town, understanding directions, discussing shops and shopping. Scholars will shop for clothes and presents using demonstrative adjectives. Scholars will discuss features of a region using se puede and se pueden. Scholars will discuss the geography of Spain. Scholars will end the term discussing problems in a town using conditional tenses, synonyms and antonyms. They will describe a visit in the past recognising and using idioms. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 6: De costumbre (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss meal times, daily routines, illnesses and injuries, asking for help at the pharmacy. Scholars will discuss typical foods using passive, describing a special day using reflexive verbs and inferring meaning in a literary text. Scholar will order a meal in a restaurant, use absolute superlatives and spot irregular patterns in the preterite. Scholar will end the term talking about music festivals, using expressions followed by the infinitive adding interest when narrating a story. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
