YEAR 7

MFL (Spanish)Term 1: ¡Vamos! – Scholars will be studying the Mira express 1 textbook and will begin term 1 learning the basics of a modern foreign language. They will be learning how to ask and answer questions, colours, numbers and the Spanish alphabet. Scholars will understand Spanish pronunciation and will also be able to use phrases in the negative. This unit will be followed by a short assessment in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 2: Mi Familia – Scholars will explore the topic of ‘my family’ this term. By the end of the unit they will be able to use possessive adjectives to talk about their families. Scholars will also learn about adjective agreement and word order in a sentence. Scholars will discuss animals, appearances and characters. Scholars will end this unit by giving a presentation about their family. Scholars will complete a summative assessment on listening, reading and writing.

Term 3: En el instituto – Scholars will look at regular–ar, -ir and –er verbs in Spanish and learn how to conjugate them in the present tense. Scholars will look at the topic of school and be able to communicate independently in Spanish, talking about their favourite subjects, their teachers and their lessons. Scholars will also be able to give opinions and reasons. This unit will be followed by a short assessment in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 4: El Tiempo Libre – Scholars will discuss their free time activities, what they enjoy doing and what they do not enjoy doing. Scholars will look at irregular verbs such as salir, hacer and ir and be able to tell the time using both a 12-hour and 24-hour clock. Scholars will also be introduced to the near future tense (ir a + infinitive) and be able to use the future and present tenses interchangeably. Scholars will complete a summative assessment on listening, speaking and reading.

Term 5: En la ciudad – Scholars will discuss the area they live in. They will be able to build longer sentences using porque and pero. They will be able to use hay to say what is in their local area and be able to say what they like to do in town. They will continue to use two tenses together and this unit will end with scholars being assessed in all four skills: listening; reading; writing and speaking.

Term 6: En Casa – Scholars will do a detailed revision of modules 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of Mira Express.  Scholars will complete a summative assessment on listening, reading and writing. Scholars will look at their houses, conjugation of more verbs and explore when they are used. Scholars will be able to talk about where they live and describe in detail their house and their bedroom. They will also be able to successfully use prepositions and understand stem – changing verbs. Scholars will complete a summative assessment on listening, reading and reading.

YEAR 8

Term 1: Los medios de communication ( Mi ordenador) – Scholars will be studying the Mira 3 textbook They will be learning about what we use computers for and practice the present tense with frequency expressions such as a veces, nunca etc. They will also be learning about television programmes, giving opinions and using adjectives. They will be using opinions to express their interest i.e ‘me gusta, me encanta etc’. Scholars will also be learning about going to the cinema; they will be able to talk about different types of films and use comparatives (mas… qué). Scholars will discuss different types of music using the near future tense ‘voy a…’. Scholars will end this term by learning how to describe an event using the preterite tense. At the end of the term scholars will be assessed in all four MFL skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 2: El Tiempo Libre y La comida – Scholars will discuss free time activities, they will discuss what they enjoy doing and what they do not enjoy doing. Scholars will also intensify their use of the near future tense (ir a + infinitive) and be able to use the future and present tenses interchangeably. Scholars will discuss meal times, shopping for food, eating at a restaurant, and discussing a past meal using the past tense. Scholars will also use more time expressions, high numbers, understand the difference between “tú" and "usted” and use preterite of “er" and "ir” verbs. Scholars will end this term by learning the preterite of different verbs and writing a creative and imaginative text. Scholars will complete a summative assessment in speaking and reading.

Term 3: Mis vacaciones – Scholars will describe their holiday experience using various opinions. They will also be learning about using the preterite of ser and ir.  Scholars will learn how to write a description of an amazing holiday. Scholars will also describe what they did on holiday. They will learn how to conjugate the preterite of AR verbs. Scholars will give a presentation about holidays using the present and preterite tenses together. Scholars will learn more about Spanish speaking countries discussing about their capital, population, geographical features, food culture etc.

Term 4: Mis vacaciones 2 – Scholars will revise the topics from terms 1, 2 and 3. They will look at what they do on their computer, TV programmes, types of films and music. They will also revise free time activities and food. Finally, they will go through holiday preferences, activities and opinions. Scholars will complete a summative assessment in listening and writing.

Term 5: En casa  Scholars will be learning about nationalities, they will be able to describe where they live. They will describe geographical features around their houses. Scholars will also discuss different types of houses and rooms. Scholars will discuss activities they do in their houses and use stem changing verbs. At the end of these three units, scholars must be able to ask someone where they live, say where they live, name some European countries, name the rooms in a house, and describe their houses or flats. Scholars will also learn how to describe their bedrooms and use prepositions to describe the positioning of items in their bedrooms. Scholars will end the term learning about daily routines using reflexive verbs. Scholars will be assessed in listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Term 6: Hispanoamérica – Scholars will be expanding their knowledge and awareness about Spanish speaking countries. They will also be learning more about Central and South America, listening for gist and detail. Scholars will also be learning to discuss daily routines using clock times and reflexive verbs accurately. Scholars will be discussing environmental problems and there will be further use of ‘se debe’. Scholars will also have the opportunity to learn and talk about different famous people using the preterite tense. Scholars will complete a summative assessment in listening and writing.

Year 9

Term 1: Mi gente 1 (Mi familia y yo) – Scholars will be studying the Viva Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Spanish textbook. They will be learning about socialising and family. Scholars will be reinforcing their knowledge about family activities. Scholars will also be learning about using possessive adjectives correctly and using verbs in the present tense. Scholars will be learning how to use the correct form of querer y poder. Scholars will also discuss family relationships and have an in-depth understanding of family tree. Scholars will develop their knowledge about personal descriptions, discuss social network, use para with infinitives and extend responses by referring to others. Scholars will end the term learning how to make arrangements using the present continuous tense and improvising dialogues.  At the end of the term scholars will complete a formative assessment in all four MFL skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 2: Mi gente 2 – Scholars will discuss reading preferences, using a range of connectives. Scholars will learn how to identify similar ideas expressed differently. Also, scholars will learn how to describe other people. Scholars will also learn the difference between Ser and Estar and their uses. Scholars will gain more knowledge understanding detailed descriptions. Scholars will go through more descriptive languages for characters and appearances. Scholars will learn to describe family and friends using a range of relationship verbs.  Scholars will also discuss who they get on well with and why. Scholars will be able to refer to the present and past. Scholars will end the term being able to describe who a good friend is.  The assessment this term will be a summative assessment covering three MFL skills: Listening, reading and writing.

Term 3: Intereses e influencias 1 – Scholars will learn about free time activities using stem changing verbs. Scholars will also be developing their knowledge about TV programmes and films and use adjectives of nationality. Scholars will discuss what they usually do, using Soler + infinitive. Scholars will learn a correct statement about a text. Scholars will complete a formative assessment in all four MFL skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 4: Intereses e influencias 2 – Scholars will be discussing about different types of sports. Scholars will also know how to use the imperfect tense to say what they used to do. Scholars will learn how to identify and use diferent tenses. Scholars will be discussing about what’s trending, they will also learn how to use the perfect tense. Scholars will also discuss words which have more than one meaning. Scholars will learn about different types of entertainment. They will also learn how and when to use algunos/ciertos/otros/muchos/demasiados/todos. Students will learn how to adapt a model dialogue to fit different situations. Scholars will discuss about famous role models who inspires them. Scholars will be able to use range of past tenses. Scholars will be able to discuss important dates. Scholars will complete a summative assessment in three MFL skills: Listening, reading and writing.

Term 5: De costumbre 1 – Scholars will describe mealtimes and food. Scholars will also discuss about daily routines and use reflexive verbs. Scholars will learn about illnesses and injuries. Scholars will be able to identify different parts of the body. Scholars will discuss about medications and learn how to ask for help at the pharmacy. Scholars will discuss typical food and how to use the passive. Scholars will learn different words that indicate an increase/a decrease. Scholars will complete a formative assessment in all four MFL skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Term 6: De costumbre 2 – Scholars will be developing their social skills through various discussions, they will be able to compare different festivals. Scholars will learn how to avoid the passive and pay attention to question words. Scholar will learn how to discuss important/special days. Scholars will learn how to use the reflexive verbs in the preterite. Students will also learn how to infer meanings in literary texts. Scholars will learn how to order a meal at a restaurant. Scholars will also know how to use the superlatives. Scholars will learn how to spot irregular verb patterns in the preterite. Scholars will learn about, music festivals. Students will learn how to use expressions followed by infinitives and add interest when narrating a story. Scholars will complete a summative assessment in three MFL skills: Listening, reading and writing.

Year 10

Term 1: ¡Desconectate! (Local area, holiday and travel) – Scholars will be using Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Spanish. Scholars will be discussing holidays and weather, they will revise present and preterite tense. Scholars will also be discussing what they do in summer, discuss holiday preferences, using verbs of opinion to refer to different people and understand percentages to discuss populations etc. Scholars will discuss where they stayed on holiday using the imperfect tense and try to work out new words. Scholars will book accommodations and deal with holiday accommodation problems using verbs with usted to form and answer questions. Scholars will end the term giving a detailed account of a holiday using three or more tenses and including positive and negative opinions. Scholars will complete a GCSE reading assessment.

Term 2: Mi vida en el insti (School) – Scholars will discuss their present and past school. They will revise school facilities; describe school uniform and school day using adjectives. Scholars will discuss subjects and teachers using comparative and superlatives justifying opinions using a range of languages. Scholars will discuss school rules and problems, use phrases followed by an infinitive and tackle harder listening exercises. Scholars will end the term discussing school exchange, activities and achievements, using object pronouns and say how long they have been doing something. Scholars will complete a GCSE listening, reading and writing assessment.

Term 3: Mi gente (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss socialising and social networks using para with infinitives. Scholars will make arrangements using present continuous tense to improve dialogues. Scholars will discuss reading preferences, using a range of connectives. Scholars will also describe people using adjectival agreement, use ser and estar and understand more detailed descriptions. Scholars will end this term describing friends and families using a range of relationship verbs referring to the present and past. Scholars will be assessed in listening and speaking.

Term 4: Intereses e influencias (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss free time activities using stem changing verbs, and discuss TV programs and films using adjectives and nationalities. Scholars will discuss what they usually do using soler + infinitive, identifying correct statements in a text. Scholars will discuss sport using imperfect tense to say what you used to do. Scholars will discuss what’s trending, words that have more than one meaning, and different types of entertainment. Scholars will end the term talking about who inspires them using a range of past tenses. Scholars will be assessed in three MFL skills: listening, reading, and writing.

Term 5: Ciudades (Local area, holiday and travel, identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss places in town, understanding directions, discussing shops and shopping. Scholars will shop for clothes and presents using demonstrative adjectives. Scholars will discuss features of a region using se puede and se pueden. Scholars will discuss the geography of Spain. Scholars will end the term discussing problems in a town using conditional tenses, synonyms and antonyms. They will describe a visit in the past recognising and using idioms. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 6: De costumbre (Identity and culture) – Scholars will discuss meal times, daily routines, illnesses and injuries, asking for help at the pharmacy. Scholars will discuss typical foods using passive, describing a special day using reflexive verbs and inferring meaning in a literary text. Scholar will order a meal in a restaurant, use absolute superlatives and spot irregular patterns in the preterite. Scholar will end the term talking about music festivals, using expressions followed by the infinitive adding interest when narrating a story. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Year 11

Term 1: ¡A currar! (Future aspirations, study and work) – Scholars will discuss about different jobs and job preferences.  Scholars will discuss what chores they do to earn money. Scholars will be able to use soler in the imperfect tense and use various verbs in different forms. Scholars will also discuss work experience using the preterite and imperfect tense together and use alternatives to ‘and’. Scholars will discuss the importance of learning languages. Scholars will be able to use the present and the present continuous tense. Scholars will differentiate between saber and conocer. Scholars will apply for a summer job, use indirect object pronouns and write a formal letter. Scholars will discuss gap year, revise the conditional tense and the 24-hour clock. Scholars will complete the term discussing future plans, use the subjunctive with cuando and explore different ways to express future plans. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 2: Hacia un mundo mejor – Scholars will discuss about types of houses and the environment. Scholars will use the conditional form of se deber (se debería). Scholars will discuss about healthy eating and discuss diet related problems. Scholars will also discuss global issues using the present subjunctive and listen for higher numbers. Scholars will discuss local actions using the subjunctives in command. Scholars will present a written argument. Scholars will discuss healthy lifestyles, understand different tenses and give extended reasons.  Scholars will discuss about international sporting events using the pluperfect tense and explain their point of view. Scholars will end the term discussing natural disasters, using the imperfect continuous tense and use grammar knowledge in translation. Scholars will be assessed in all MFL four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Term 3: Revision (Modules 1-8) – Scholars will be revising Modules 1-8 in Viva Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Spanish. Careful attention will be payed to the two self-taught topics (Modules 4 and 6). Intereses e influencias and De costumbre.

Terms 4 & 5: General mock across the four MFL skills listening, speaking reading and writing. Scholars will be completing GCSE past papers, mock papers and selected exam style questions compiled by the teacher.
